Fox Repellent Buyers Guide

The fox has been known for years as a pest and an unwanted nuisance for many. Deterring foxes from homes has been the cause of much debate over the years, but one thing that can’t be argued is the problems that they cause, killing rabbits, cats and chickens, making a mess and fouling in gardens. Traditionally, foxes were only a pest for countryside homes and farms – killing chickens and digging up plants. However, in more recent years the urban fox has started to cause a nuisance in even the most residential areas!

Finding deterrents for a persistent fox in your garden can be difficult – there are many fox repellents on the market but finding a way to get rid of a fox from your garden that is effective can be difficult! We have considered a number of fox deterrents that are available to best-rid foxes from your garden.

Only Got 5 Minutes?

If foxes are causing a real nuisance in your garden – maybe you have stood in one too many fox poo or said goodbye to one too many chickens – then this part of the article is for you. We have compiled some of the main fox repellents in the UK available to help get rid of foxes in your garden. It is important to note that all of the devices we have found are humane and safe for the foxes, that aim to scare the foxes without any risk to them – or you!

Motion Activated Animal Deterrents

Motion-activated fox deterrents are designed to deter foxes from your garden when the motion sensor notices that there is something in your garden. Different deterrents will then work in different ways to try and remove the pest from your garden. The benefits of motion-activated fox deterrents are that they will only be activated when something moves past them, meaning that the rest of the time they will be dormant in your garden, this will save you money on powering the devices and will stop the devices from causing a nuisance to you. However, as the devices are motion-activated they will not be able to discern between a fox and another animal, such as a dog, cat or rabbit, in your garden. This could then lead to the sensor activating the device for these animals too – leaving your precious pets with a bit of a shock and a scare!

Prickle Strips

Strips such as this won’t necessarily prevent animals from coming into your garden, but it will stop them from making a mess while they are in there! Foxes are well known for digging up bedding areas and plants in gardens, and even digging away the ground around a chicken coop to get in and kill those poor, innocent chickens! Prickle strips can be placed just under the soil level so that when the foxes start digging the material will irritate their paws and stop them from digging.

This device is relatively cheap and will work for other animals too, such as cats. However, it will be unlikely to completely deter foxes from your garden so maybe worth trying with another deterrent at the same time!

Ultrasonic Deterrents

Usually, motion-activated, ultrasonic deterrents work by simply emitting a high-frequency sound that will deter these pesky predators whenever they are sensed in your garden. This noise will scare any pests, such as foxes that come into your garden. The benefits of ultrasonic deterrents is that they can be placed at the points in your garden where you suspect the foxes are entering to stop them invading your space in the first place! They also tend to have quite a good range so will cover a fair part of your garden. However, they will be activated by any movement that passes them, whether this is a fox, animal or even human! As the noise is also unpleasant for dogs and cats etc. you could find it upsetting your pets more than those determined foxes!

Water Deterrents

Water deterrents work in a similar way to ultrasonic models, waiting for a motion detector to activate the spray and scare off the foxes that are damaging your garden or scaring your pets. They spray a jet of water towards the direction of the motion so are completely safe and will not harm the fox, simply scare it away. Although it is important to check how powerful each model is to see the range of the spray, as your nuisance four-legged neighbours could end up just avoiding the spray! Similar to ultrasonic models – you also need to consider the animals that you DO want in your garden and the effect it will have on them.

Light Deterrents

There are two main types of light deterrents – ones that are motion activated and ones that are set to being permanently on throughout the night. The idea of these models is to appear as other predators eyes in the dark, to stop the foxes from wanting to come into your garden. Foxes are naturally wary animals so if they suspect there is another animal in the garden it is rare that they will risk coming into the garden and will be scared off.

Fox Deterrent Sprays

There are a number of fox deterrent sprays available on the market that can be sprayed around your garden to deter foxes from coming into your garden. These have combined different chemicals to create a scent that will be unappealing to foxes. If these are sprayed near your bins and bedding areas, then foxes will be unlikely to come looking for food or fouling and digging up your plants. It is important to seek advice on whether it is safe to use each spray in your garden though depending on whether you have children or other animals that are using your garden as some of the chemicals could be harmful.

Additional Features to Consider

Now we have looked at the main types of fox deterrent, you should have an idea of the best fox deterrent to keep foxes away from your garden. However, there are some more things to consider before making your purchase if you want to be sure to deter the foxes and rid them from your garden for good!

Solar-powered deterrents

It is important to consider how your fox deterrents will be powered. Some are battery ran, which is nice and simple, but will mean that you have to be conscious of them running out and being replaced or recharged regularly! It is rare that models will be powered by mains electricity but some are. These will be more reliable than other methods but will be more difficult to fit in your garden and will cost more to run. Last but definitely not least (in our opinion anyway!) is solar-powered deterrents. These have the benefit of being free to run, without the effort of having to remember to charge them or replace batteries. Equally, being free from mains electricity means that they can be placed wherever you want – as long as they are going to have access to enough sunlight!

Position in your garden

The features of many fox repellents in the UK are dependent on their position in your garden if you are wanting them to be truly effective! Although time-consuming, it is well worth spying on your foxy predators when they are coming into your garden (usually at night) so that you can work out how they are getting into your garden and the main places in the garden that they are habituating. This means that you will be able to position the fox deterrents in the most effective place to either scare them from your garden or simply stop them in the first place!

Range Covered

No matter what fox repellent you choose, it is crucial to consider the range that it will cover, as this will determine how effective it will be, and also how many deterrents you will need to purchase to fully eradicate them from your garden! Some fox deterrents will only work for around 3 metres, whereas others work up to 10 metres in distance. Make sure to consider the size and shape of your garden to make sure that as much of your garden is covered as possible.

DIY Fox Deterrents

If you are looking for fox deterrents that can be created at home, then we have a few suggestions for you.

Lotions and Potions

Foxes rely a lot on their scent and will be put off going into any garden that smells unpleasant to them. Cutting up onion, pepper and garlic, and then boiling in water will create a scent enough to put off any fox (and many humans too!). Then simply spray it around your garden to deter the foxes. This is a nice cheap option to repel the foxes, however, you will have to remember to do this regularly as the scent will fade, particularly in bad weather.

Chicken Wire

Although it will take time and considerable effort, fox proofing your garden with chicken wire can make a massive difference if foxes are adamant that your garden is their territory! Putting chicken wire over any gaps in fencing, and also in bedding areas (and then cutting gaps to plant your plants) will help to make your garden an unwelcoming place for foxes. Similarly, if you secure chicken wire around a chicken coop and even dig it down into the ground then you will avoid foxes digging up the ground to get into your chickens!

What is the Best Fox Deterrent?

There is no single solution for deterring foxes from your garden. However, we have come up with some solutions that we would recommend as being simple but effective ways to repel foxes from your garden in a humane and safe way

We would recommend going for a double approach (as a minimum) if you are wanting to fully deter these determined animals from your garden. Choosing a motion-activated device for your property is a simple way to repel foxes from your garden without any risk to you or other animals in your garden. We would couple this with chicken wire or prickle strips, to stop foxes from both getting access to your garden and from finding your garden a good place to be! It won’t take foxes long to realise there is nothing to be gained from being in your garden and choose somewhere else to damage and cause a nuisance too!

It is worth mentioning that reports suggest prevention is the best cure for keeping foxes out of your garden. Make sure that you do not have easy access to food waste and that your bins are locked away. Equally, make sure that your garden is well secured and that (if you have them) chickens are locked away in the evenings. Simple things like this will help to stop the foxes from being as keen to make your garden their territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will human urine deter foxes?

Foxes are territorial animals so if they are made to feel unsafe and unwelcome in their territory from a bigger “predator” they will be more unlikely to leave your garden. Male urine will release this aroma that will make the foxes feel uncomfortable but this would have to be regularly repeated in your garden to keep the foxes away!

Does vinegar keep foxes away?

Many animals, including foxes, do not like the smell of vinegar, so will be less likely to go into your garden if you are pouring vinegar around your garden. However, it is important to also consider the effect that it could have on plants and your own animals in your garden!

Will the council remove foxes from my area?

Unfortunately, foxes are not classed as vermin, so, therefore, the council has no requirement to move them from your area – no matter how much destruction they are causing! You will find that some councils will work with animal rescue centres to safely remove foxes from the area using humane traps, but they are not obligated to do this.
